How do I become a foster parent?

Agency Requirements

  • You must be a legal US citizen.

  • You must be at least 21 years of age and in good health.

  • You can be single or married.

  • You must have a stable home and be able to show you are financially stable.

  • You must have adequate sleeping space for a child.

  • You must be able to read and write.

  • You must have a telephone.

  • You must be willing to submit to criminal checks, fingerprints and provide references.

  • You must attend 30 hours or more of preparation group training sessions.

  • You must provide health and criminal background records for everyone in your home over the age 18.

Required Initial Training

  • 30 hours of basic pre-service training required for all foster parents.

  • 10 hours of training specifically related to therapeutic foster care.

  • Substance Abuse and its Effects on Families and Adolescents

  • Crisis Intervention

  • Working with Emotionally Disturbed Children

  • 14 hours Together Facing the Challenge

  • CPR/First Aid

  • Medication Administration

Licensing requirements include a fire inspection, environmental inspection, physical exams, and criminal record checks.

What type of housing arrangements do I need?

1.  You may rent or own your home, apartment, mobile home.
2.  Must have a separate bedroom for foster child.
3.  Home must be safe and present no health concerns.
4.  All pets must be vaccinated.
